Fortunately, it is very easy to go around given its small size and availability of public transport. A lot can be covered in a short time!

Transportation

Inter-City: There are 2 main bus stations;

-Charles Helou to go to cities North of Beirut such as Jounieh, Byblos, Batroun, Tripoli etc.

-Cola to go to cities South of Beirut such as Chouf, Baalbek, Sidon, Tyre, Beiteddeen etc.

The buses run every 15 minutes so there is always a running bus.

Private Taxi: If you are in a group of more than 3, I would recommend ordering a taxi because the shared price would be cheaper than bus tickets for each person combined.

There is a fixed rate so you can always call the taxi company to check their rate and it is based on the destination and the type of vehicle you choose.

Within the City:

For short distances; use a Service. It is a shared taxi (red car plate) for about 2000LL/2USD per person. It is important to inform the driver that you want to ride a Service because sometimes they would take you as a private taxi ride which costs a lot!

For longer distances, ask a local around you on which minivans to take to get to your destination. It doesn’t have a clear sign so it’s best to ask around.

Lebanese people are extremely friendly and helpful!

Places to Visit

1. Beirut

– Mar Mikhael: Known as the bar district and also popular for their colored stairs that were covered by Vogue as one of the most creative staircases in the world! Although the color has faded, they still look pretty instagrammable.

– Down Town:  It is the central district also known as Centre Ville. Stroll around the commercial and cosmopolitan area then head down towards Al Abed Clock Tower,  continue towards the Marty Square then the former Byzantine church which currently serves as a mosque called Mohammed Al Amin. Continue towards the North of Beirut to visit the pretty Saifi Village and further up to Sursock Palace.

Do visit Souk El Tayeb on Saturdays between 9a.m. to 2p.m. where you will find loads of fresh organic products, food, vegetables, drinks and what not.

– Hamra – I’ve stayed in this neighborhood twice and it is a central and busy location with many stores, cafe, restaurants, and souvenir shops.

– Burj Hammoud – One of my favorite place to visit! This is where Armenians fleed during the genocide and continued their settlement to date.

It has a completely different vibe than other parts of Beirut.

– Corniche: Take a stroll along the seaside and walk towards Zaytouna Bay where you will find restaurants, yachts and surrounded by high rise modern buildings.

– Raouche Rock – This is found in every guidebook but I don’t find it special. You will eventually drive by as you go around Beirut but it is not a must stop/visit.

– Gemmayze – Another hip district that’s perfect for a stroll with many boutiques, chic cafes, and restaurants. The Original Em Ali (Gluten Free Saj) and Tibliyet Masaad (The best Shish Tawouk Sandwich) is also located there!

2. Baalbek –  The colossal Roman structure is pretty impressive.

Visit Baalbek if you have at least 4 days in Lebanon. It’s a 5 hours journey by bus, definitely worth the trip but not a must visit if you are crunched on time since there isn’t much to do within Baalbek itself.

3. Byblos – It is a coastal town and one of the oldest cities in the world! A good few days in Byblos is recommended to enjoy walking along the alleyways of the old souk, visit Byblos Castle and drive towards the east to visit Baatara Gorge Waterfall, however, it’s best visited after the rain to actually see the waterfall.

4. Chouf – It’s a historic region located in the South East of Lebanon with many beautiful sites to visit.

– Deir al Qamar

– Beit Ed Deen was built in the 19th Century with inlaid marbles and mosaics. Every part of the palace is impressive!

– Mousa Castle – Every single brick in this castle tells a story. This castle was built single-handedly by a man and took about 60 years to complete.

5. Tripoli – Tripoli will take you back in time when Lebanon used to be the

– Abdulrahman Hallab & Sons for their famous sweets but their Lahm baajine (meat pie) is my favorite.

– Sultan Abdulhamid Clock Tower – A gift to the city of Tripoli that was built by the Ottomans. There’s a nice park by the clock tower to unwind.

– Citadel of Raymond Saint Gills – For a 360 view of Tripoli.

– Mansouri Mosque – It is also known as the Great Mosque of Tripoli that was built around the 13th Century.

– Souk Haraj – A bustling souk that sells almost everything.

– Khan Al Saboun – Perfect place to get natural products as a souvenir. They even have soap made out of gold!

– Khan Al Khayateen – There are several Khan’s in Tripoli which used to be a caravansary. There are various caravansaries and each one has its specialty. This one is specialized in textiles so you will find many tailors too!

– Port of Tripoli – Enjoy a seafood meal by the port.

6. Ksara Winery – Highly recommended en route to Baalbek for a free tour and wine tasting.

7. Akoura – So I’m not quite sure on what’s there to offer in Akour but it is a  mountainous village and has these pretty ponds!

8. Jounieh – Known for the popular site; Harissa aka Lady of Lebanon. It also offers a magnificent view of the coast. There’s a cable car that goes up and down the statue but you could also access it by driving up to the church. If you’re tight in cash, skip the cable car.

9. Mleeta – It is also known as Museum for Resistance Tourism. It felt surreal walking through the set up of a war camp with sound effects, bunkers, tunnels and surrounded with real military stuff!

10. Nightlife – Here are my favorite spots in Beirut other than the bar district in Mar Mikhael

11. Faraya- If you happen to visit Faraya, check out the Roman ruins of Faqra Archeological Site. It’s not worth driving only for the site, but worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Food

With endless great restaurants, little time and limited tummy space, I’ve narrowed down my favorite restaurants that guarantee a happy belly!

1. Barbar – It is a chain restaurant that can be found in several locations in Beirut. They’re famous for their chicken shawerma and lahm baajine.

2. Tibliyet Masaad – THE BEST SHISH TAWOUK SANDWICH I HAVE EVER TASTED! I loved it so much that I bought 5 boxes to take home.

3. Abu Abdullah – A great place for breakfast. I especially love their fattah awarma.

4. Em Nazih – A great hippie cafe located in a really cool hostel in Gemmayze.

5. Noy – A must try Armenian restaurant if you go to Burj Hammoud. Their manti was exceptional!

6. Manghal – Another authentic Armenian restaurant that will leave you drooling for more.

7. T Marbouta – Delicious food and reasonably priced. My favorite would be Kebba Kushari!

8. The Original Em Ali – Popular for their organic and gluten-free saj! I recommend the rocket and cheese topping!

Backpacking may seem difficult and uncomfortable, but if you have the right tools, it’s the most comfortable and convenient way to travel. It’s okay if it’s not your ideal way of traveling but I think it is worth a try!

Here I’m going to list out my must-haves which you could also find in my Amazon Store.

1. The Right Backpack – In order to travel light, you need the right backpack that’s versatile, durable, practical and definitely comfortable.

I’m sure you have noticed that most backpackers use Osprey and that’s only because it is the best in the market and it is priced reasonably. Not only it is extremely durable; it has a lifetime warranty! My backpack always gets thrown around dirt, buses, I sometimes use it as a back support or pillow to sleep on and it is still in perfect shape!

I use a 46 Kyte. I find it the perfect size. Not too big for a carry on and fits everything  I need. The longest time I have traveled with a 46L was 3 weeks and I still had plenty of room.

My backpack usually weighs between 13 – 17kg and I can carry it around without feeling the weight or any sort of pain. Purchase one from Amazon

2. Eagle Creek Cubes – The cubes are my favorite thing! I can’t travel without it. It is an absolute must! It keeps everything organized, compressed and easy to find especially when you are always on the move. It is extremely lightweight, durable and waterproof! Some cubes can even be compressed! Check out the various options they have from Amazon. 

3. Rubber Tubes – I have had plastic ones but they never last or ends up with a leak. These babies are wonderful! I fill my shampoo, conditioner and any other liquid/cream in these containers. I’ve been using it for 2 years and it is leak proof! Get your Go Toob from here. 

4. Anker Power Bank – You need at least one power bank. I always carry 2 in case I end up in a place where I can’t charge my electronics. I think we can all agree Anker is the best ones yet!

5. Day Bag – A good day bag is as essential as a great backpack. Having a lightweight, organized and multiple use day bag makes traveling a lot more comfortable.

I have used Daylite Plus Pack from Osprey which was good for up to 4 days trip. The difference between Daylite & Daylite Plus is the latter has a pocket for your laptop. 

6. Micro Fiber Towel – This is a must for every traveler. Whether backpacker or not, you don’t want to pack wet towels and end up stinking your bag.

You can find many brands and they’re all good. I use Eagle  Creek in size L. It’s enough to dry my hair & body but not to wrap around. I personally use this one. 

7. Only carry essentials – If it’s a “Maybe I’ll wear it” you will never wear it. I find packing twice help me filter out and remove things I don’t need.

8. Compression Sack – This is useful when you have bulky winter jackets/tents/sleeping bags etc. It compresses the item at least two sizes down! This one from Sea to Summit is also waterproof.

9. International Power Adapter – This is self-explanatory. You don’t want to be stuck not being able to charge your gadgets because you missed bringing the right adapter! Save the hassle buy buying one adapter for all types!

10. Pack Basics – Pack basics of each item because fundamentally, that’s all you need. So, 2 leggings, a few short & long sleeves t-shirt, a few tank tops, 1 swimwear, 1 sportswear, a pair of jeans, a dress and maybe a few outerwears to brighten up the neutral and casual wear. You get what I mean, only necessities.

The quick weekend getaway will take you to volcanic areas, caves, clear blue water, and black sand dunes in 3 days!

Day 1: Yanbu – Campsite

We were picked up from Yanbu Airport and driven to the campsite on a volcanic area. The area requires a 4X4 car.

The weather was pretty chilly and it picked up some wind in the middle of the night.

Day 2: Hiking

We started our day at 8 am for a 10km hike to explore 3 caves.

The trail is mostly flat ground with different terrains; hard lava, fine volcanic materials, flat sand.

To go down into one of the caves, we used a 6-meter ladder that’s already held in place. It’s safe!

You may want to consider taking an antihistamine and a mouth cover as the place is filled with heaps of bird waste.

We have been blessed with plenty rainfalls this year that plants grew in one of the caves.

We had our break with a warm cup of tea before heading back to the campsite.

Black Sand Dunes

Post lunch, we packed up and headed to an area known as “ارض القمر” which means the land of the moon.

As you can see, the volcanic materials are wearing off from the volcanic mountains. Over time, it created a vast area of black sand dunes

If you check google earth, you would be able to see the black area where we camped and the location of the black sand dunes located west of Al-Ais

Al Shabhah Town

As the sun sets, we visited the old town of Al Shabhah where we were greeted in the most traditional way by a group of kind locals.

The locals are putting together an effort to restore the old houses and artifacts of the area for visitors to enjoy.

They demonstrated a traditional way of making wheat bread which is by placing the dough directly on ash and covered with charcoal.

Then the bread is beaten to get rid of the ash and crumbled. Lastly, it is served with a lot of ghee.

It may not sound appealing but once you try it, you won’t be able to stop. It has a very distinct flavor and taste.

Then we camped by the seashore of Umluj.

Day 3 – Swim/Dive/Snorkel

We went to the boat rental spot in Umluj and hopped in one and went to the tiny islands spread around where we snorkeled.

The water is crystal clear with many beautiful corals everywhere. 

I wanted to dive but there wasn’t enough time between diving and my flight.

We ended it with a feast of seafood!

It was one of the most exciting trips I experienced in Saudi and I recommend everyone to visit the locations mentioned!

I visited Hadhramaut and I can vouch that it is safe for Arabs to explore on their own. As of Westerners/Europeans, it is crucial to have a local for your own safety and to avoid being forced to leave the country by officials.

To protect yourself, blend as a local and avoid unwanted attention. Females, in particular, should dress as covered as possible.

I wore an abaya and a scarf but without a face cover. I did not feel like I was in danger even walking alone during day or night time. Please note that I felt comfortable doing so as I am a Yemeni Citizen and I understood and somewhat speak the local language.

How is life in Yemen?

I have not been to the conflicted area. For Hadhramout, there is nothing outside the normality. However, what we consider as basic needs such as electricity and internet is not available at all times.

Electricity gets cut off multiple times a day for a few hours, as for internet, there isn’t any 2G, 3G or 4G. The only way to get a decent internet is if you buy a sim card and a phone but that would be a waste if you are only visiting for a few days. Houses or hotels have a stable internet connection that you could use. Say goodbye to your instant videos or photos.

How do I get a visa to Yemen?

Yes, you can go around the mainland with the same visa.

The cheapest flight was to Pakistan and it’s the country I’ve really wanted to go but the thought of going through a long visa process was dreadful.

Until a simple message to an acquaintance opened up the door for me as he knows someone in the consulate that was going to help me get a visa.

With such a short time before my travel date, I didn’t even look for a CS host or think of anything except buying my flight to Islamabad.

Heck, I even traveled with ONE WAY flight! I have NEVER done that! Every plane I’ve boarded always requires a return or connecting flight.  Luckily, this one didn’t even ask and I also got upgraded to Business Class!

Anyways! I just wanted to show you guys how impromptu the trip was. My next worry was the immigration in case they ask for a return flight or even accommodation because I didn’t have any.

I got to the immigration counter, he asked;

IO: “Where’s your return ticket?”

Me: “I don’t have any because I’m not sure if I would fly out from Lahore or Karachi or any other cities.”- I started to shiver a little out of panic.

IO: “Show me the Letter of Invitation.”

Me: “I don’t have a copy but I can show it on my phone”

IO: “But this is in Karachi, you’re in Islamabad. I need an address and contact person in Islamabad” Shit! I’m screwed.

Me: “I don’t have an address; I have my friend waiting for me outside” (BIG FAT LIE) I don’t even know why I said that. I should have said, I’ll make a booking now or anything else but lie!

IO: “Your friend is waiting outside?”

Me: “Yes, he is. He’s going to take me to my accommodation so I don’t have the address.”

IO: “Give me his number.” And shit got real.

Me: “Here you go.” I gave a number of a CS guy I spoke to just an hour before taking off and I was praying for him to answer the call. I mean who would answer at 5 a.m.!

Then he started speaking to him in Urdu. I was in shock and surprised that he actually answered his phone.

I was praying to God that he would remember my name! We only spoke for a bit on WhatsApp.

All I could understand was “guest, and address”

Then I heard him say “panch minute” which means 5 minutes. And I thought; Hold up! Did he ask how long it would take for me to go out? Is he actually outside?

He hung up the call and I quickly asked: “Is my friend outside?” He said “Yes”

I calmly nodded but I was jumping in so much happiness inside!

My big fat lie fell right into place! HOW?! HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?! The guy I spoke to on CS did NOT tell me he was coming to pick me at 5 a.m. from the airport!

I was off to a great start!

I walked out of the airport with a jaw drop. Half of Pakistanis were at the airport! I have NEVER EVER seen such crowded receiving end at the airport. I felt like I was walking in a pageant.

Yep yep, All eyes on me! *beauty queen wave*

So here’s how my trip went while in Pakistan

Day 1 – Rawalpindi/Islamabad

As soon as I arrived, my CS host was trying to find accommodation within my budget range. Accommodation in Islamabad isn’t cheap I tell ya! Airbnb or CouchSurfing would be your best options.

A basic room in a guest house costs between 16 to 25USD and this is BASIC.

I stayed at Rakaposhi Guest House in F7 for 16USD a night.

After freshening up, I started exploring Islamabad on a bike using the app Careem. 

Faisal Mosque

The mosque is funded by King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, hence the name Faisal Mosque. It’s shaped like a Bedouin tent. The mosque is located on the Margala hills which make it visible from everywhere in Islamabad.

Said Pur Village

A stunning tourist built village but also has a real village with old temples behind all the colorful restaurants and cafes.

Monal Restaurant

There are many restaurants for a viewpoint of Islamabad along the hill. Monal seems to be one of the famous ones. However, the food wasn’t great. Maybe I didn’t order the right items but you guys should try the other less popular restaurants and share your experience!

Lok Virsa Museum

Lok Virsa is a cultural and heritage museum where you can learn about the cultures and traditions of different regions in Pakistan.

Pakistan Monument

Legit one of the most beautiful monument I have ever seen. It’s best visited at night. The four leaves represent the four provinces of Pakistan. And in each lotus petals, there are detailed drawings of its history.

It’s simply beautiful!

Day 2 – Rawalpindi/Islamabad

Visa errand all day!

I spent my morning biking around the old city of Rawalpindi and had breakfast in a local restaurant.

By 9 a.m. I went back to Islamabad to start my visa process for Afghanistan.

I arrived, spoke to the counter and explained my purpose of visit. After he is convinced, then only he gave me the form to fill.

I filled the form, got my passport and visa copy but I needed a contact person and address in Kabul before handing it in. I waited about an hour until a friend replied then submitted my paper. After an hour, they said they needed a Non-Objection Certificate from the Yemeni embassy.

So I quickly rushed before they closed. I got to the embassy and sat with the ambassador. We had a nice chat and he gave me ample advice to avoid visiting countries with question marks on them for my own safety. He was really sweet and kind but of course, I didn’t take the advice 😛

It took another hour until I got the papers, then I went back to the embassy only to find out that they have gone on a two hours break. So I went to Centaurus Mall to kill time and cool off. I sat in Gloria Jean’s for a nice view of Islamabad. Two hours passed, went back and submitted all my papers and payment fee and then told they only accept US Dollars. I went and exchanged to USD. After I came back and paid, they said to collect it on 29^th August and I needed it for 22^nd Aug so I asked for an urgent visa. That was an extra 50USD so I had to find the one and only bank where I can withdraw and then go to a currency exchange and went back only to find out I was 10USD short! 50+80USD= 120USD. What a brain fart! I went back to exchange an extra 10USD and then submitted my documents. Then I had to wait under the heat until 5:30 p.m. to receive my visa. IT WAS A LONG TIRING DAY.

My host picked me up with his cousin and friend then we went off to Murre. We arrived rather late because my visa was taking so long so we didn’t get the most out of Muree. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the cool weather and view from Gloria Jean’s.

After a 4 hours ride to Murree, I decided to go to Hunza Valley the same evening.

So off I went on a 14 hours carpool journey to the North of Pakistan I was actually looking forward to the long journey. I got in the car at about 11 p.m. and slept through the journey like a baby cause I didn’t sleep on my first night. (I can’t sleep whenever I stay alone in a guesthouse/hotel)

Day 3 – Hunza Valley

I woke up with a mountainous view in Gilgit Baltistan. I arrived at about 12 p.m. in Aliabad. 

The driver registered me at the first checkpoint and showed this to the following checkpoints until we arrive. This is also needed when leaving Gilgit Baltistan. 

I stayed in the Mountain View Hotel for 12USD per night. It’s a basic room without electricity LOL! Hunza had a power cut that week so the hotel owner would only turn on the generator a few hours during the night.

Karimabad is the go-to place for cafés, restaurants and it is also where the two forts are located; Baltit Fort & Altit Fort.

It is about 10 minutes ride on a Suzuki from Aliabad. It costs 0.16cents.

Staying in Karimabad would be ideal but a night stay during offseason could start from 40USD/night due to its tourist hub location. Aliabad is only 10 minutes ride away, so might as well save the cash and stay in Aliabad.

Baltit Fort, Altit Fort, Café de Hunza, and Pavillion restaurant is a must visit. I really wanted to visit the Khunjrab Pass which is the highest border crossing in the world. It also has the highest ATM in the world!

However, the cheapest car I found was for 65USD which is a GREAT deal but I was on a budget and I couldn’t find other travelers to go with and share the cost.

Day 4 – Hunza Valley

Since the Khunjrab plan went down the drain, a CS host offered to take on a tour around Hunza Valley in exchange for filling the petrol for 8USD per person which is again a great bargain!

We started with Attabad lake, a stunning clear blue lake that was formed after a landslide that covered two villages under the beautiful lake. The lake was formed in 2015 and had taken up a large size in such a short time.

After that, we went to Husseini suspension bridge which is also one of the most dangerous suspension bridge in the world. There is absolutely no safety measure if you drop which I hope no one drops! The wobbly rope and widely placed wooden plank

There we also enjoyed the view of Passu Cones. We had the option to hike up to Passu Glacier but I was so tired and out of shape to attempt the climb.

So we went to Borith lake.

After that, we headed back and on the way, we saw some black glacier.

He dropped me off at Café de Hunza again, since it’s a great café with a stunning view and most importantly, a good WiFi connection. Internet coverage is really terrible around Gilgit.

A CouchSurfer joined my table with another traveler and we had a nice chat.

In the evening we went for a delicious dinner at Café Kamal in Aliabad and hung out on the roof of our guest house and watched the Milky Way. Eagle’s nest is said to be a great spot for sunrise, sunset or milky way viewing if the sky is clear.

Day 5:

The ride back from Hunza Valley to Islamabad, unfortunately, starts at 7 a.m. So I was in the car from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

My host in Islamabad offered his family’s wedding hall to crash in and there was a wedding rehearsal when I got there so I got a little preview of a Pakistani wedding.

We hung out at a café until about 3a.m. where I decided to drag my host to Lahore with me and to take the bus at 6:30 a.m.

Day 6 – Lahore

We missed the 6:30 bus and waited an hour for the next bus. The Daewoo bus is very comfortable, cheap and convenient. We took the cheapest bus and it was great. It was 6.5USD for a 4 hours journey to Lahore.

We were picked up by another CS to tour us around Lahore. He was so nice to pick us up very last minute in his car. The weather was extremely humid!

Badshahi Mosque

This red sandstone mosque with intricate tile work and white marble interior is 350 years old from the Mughal Era. I visited a day before Eid Al Adha so the main entrance area was covered with shades for the Eid Prayer.

Street Food

Lahore is known to be the King of street food in Pakistan. However, they were all closed due to Eid and we found only one place that was open where I had knuckle soup. It was DE-LISH! The first time I tried it was in Sudan and simply loved it!

Wagah Border

The Rangers perform a parade and they both compete on who stomps the loudest, swing their leg highest, and untying the flag!

It’s a very light and patriotic event where both sides chant to their country’s slogan and cheer for their rangers. It’s definitely an experience you shouldn’t miss.

Then we left Lahore around 10.30 p.m. and arrived in Islamabad at 3 a.m.

Day 7:

I was picked up at 6 a.m. from the wedding hall and started my journey to Kabul which you can read more about here.

Transport

Intercity: There are buses, trains, and carpools.

Daewoo Bus: You can book online or get the ticket at the station.

Faisal Mover: This is on the lower standard which I have not personally tried. I used their car service which was in an old car without an AC.

Carpooling: This is the most convenient way for long distances to cut the journey time by 5 to 6 hours compared to going on a bus.

Islamabad – Hunza Valley 32 USD

Islamabad – Torkham Border (Afghanistan) 16USD

Within the city – Careem is a ride hail app similar to Uber that is widely used in the major cities in Pakistan. It’s very cheap and convenient. It even comes with a bike and tuk-tuk option!

Accommodation

Islamabad:  The most recommended neighborhood is F6, F7, G6, and G7.

Rawalpindi: Unless you’re staying at an Airbnb/Couchsurfer’s house, you might get denied to stay in a guest hotel as they would need to get paperwork done prior to accepting your stay. I tried to stay in a guest house but they suggested to go back to Islamabad.

Hunza Valley:

Karimabad would be an ideal location but the price gets tripled.

Aliabad would be the next best option because it is only 10 minutes away from Karimabad.

Notes:

Carry a few copies of your passport and visa. Intercity travel check posts usually take a copy. If you are going to Hunza, get a police registration card at the Gilgit Police Station. From then on, you would only need to show the card instead of giving a copy of the passport and visa.

What is the visa duration?

Sports Event is through www.sharek.sa that provide an E Visa for 30 days single entry.

Cultural Event uses a separate platform and the duration may vary based on the event duration.

What is the visa process?

Sports Event: Simply purchase the ticket to attend an event through www.sharek.sa and fill in the required information. You will receive your E Visa in a matter of minutes in your email. That’s it!

Cultural Event: Process varies. Please check with the event team for info.

Do I need a guardian to get a visa?

No, you do not need a guardian.

Can all nationalities apply for the visa?

It depends on the event. Formula E Visa did not have any nationality restriction, however, the Italian Supercup was limited to North Americans/South Americans/UK/Europeans/Australians and New Zealanders.

Do I need to be above 25 years old to get a visa?

No, you don’t.

Do I need a guardian to travel around Saudi?

No, you do not need a guardian.

Can females travel alone in Saudi?

Yes, females can travel independently in Saudi.

I have chosen an airport as a point of entry, can I enter by land?

Yes, you can enter by land. These are the available land borders into Saudi; Bahrain, Jordan, UAE, and Yemen.

What should I wear?

Females:

Length – Above ankle length and below the knee length

Sleeves – 3/4 sleeves is your minimum

Colors – as colorful as you please!

Patterns – As crazy as you wish!

Style – Any style as long as it is decent.

Scarves – Not needed

Burqa – Definitely not needed

Bikinis – 2 piece bikinis are allowed in private beaches/boat trips.

PS: We love unique abayas so expect strangers coming up to you asking where you get it from.

Males – Anything and shorts are allowed.

Note: Shorts are not allowed in Saudi Airlines flights.

Will I be harassed if I don’t wear a black abaya and a headscarf?

No, you won’t but I don’t control the population’s behavior. Personally, I don’t face harassment.

Can the religious police arrest me?

No, they don’t have any authority and almost nonexistent.

Can females and males be seen together?

Yes, they can.

What is the proper way to greet another gender?

This depends on the context.

Hugging is a normal way of greetings with friends and especially expats.

With locals that you meet for the first time, here’s a quick guide.

Male & Male – Handshake or handshake with a kiss on the right cheek and two on the left cheek. Sometimes, they do more on the left.

Male & Female – Wait for the female to give her hand, or else simply nod your head.

Female & Female – Handshake or handshake with a kiss on the cheeks. The number of kisses per cheek varies and it can get confusing. The basic rule is 1 on the right side and 2 on the other side and then step away. Sometimes it can get awkward where the other person expects the 3rd kiss but that’s normal. Just laugh it off or go in for the 3rd kiss.

Saudi is huge! Where should I begin my trip?

This depends on your point of entry and interest. These cities/regions are a must visit; Jeddah, Riyadh, Qassim, Al Ula, Tabuk, Aseer Region, and Jazan Region.

Yes, SAPTCO bus has an extensive network and it is the only national bus company.

How long should I stay in Saudi?

I would say as much as you can. If you are tight on time, 2 to 3 weeks is fair. However, it would be an exhausting trip because the distance between cities is huge.

It’s a simple electronic visa process that takes 2 to 3 working days at most.

Step 1:

Go to www.visa.mofa.gov.sa

Step 2:

Click on Citizens & Residence

Step 3:

Click Resident Tab and choose Family Visit Visa Application for Residents

Step 4:

Fill in the required information.

Note:

The form is only available in Arabic.

The requester’s address should be in the same city as the sponsor

Step 5:

Save the document as PDF and send it to your sponsor to get it electronically authenticated. This costs 35 SAR.

Step 6:

Check the status of the application 1 or 2 days after it got authenticated

Step 7:

A visa document is issued which needs to be printed and submitted to the nearest consulate/embassy to get the visa sticker on the passport of the visitor.

That’s it folk! It’s a simple procedure that takes between 2 to 3 working days.

The visa fee varies based on nationality.
